Exciting news, the Library is hatching chicks! We are incubating 24 “rainbow” chicken eggs in our special chick incubator. Below is a list of FAQs regarding the hatching process.
FAQS
how many days until the eggs hatch?
It takes about 21-23 days for eggs to hatch.
what temperature should the eggs be kept at?
They must be kept at a steady temperature of about 99-100 degrees, which is what it would be like if they were sitting under the hen. They also need specific humidity (about 55%) and air circulation. Air passes through tiny holes in the shell.
how are the chick EMBRYOS able to breathe?
The chick embryos breathe air inside the egg, and there is a small air sac at the end of the egg.
what are the EGGS kept in?
The eggs are sitting on a special automatic egg turner which slowly rotates them back and forth. The hen would move the eggs multiple times a day if she was sitting on them. This keeps the embryo from sticking to the inside of the shell.
HOW DO THE EMBRYOS GET nourishment?
The embryos get nourishment from what we know as the yolk of the egg. The yolk will be gone by the time they hatch.
WILL THE EGGS YOU BUY FROM THE GROCERY STORE HATCH A CHICK?
The eggs from a grocery store will almost never hatch a chick because the hens that lay them have not been around a rooster. You need a rooster to fertilize the eggs to make chicks!
